After his remarks on the Panama Canal, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked controversy again, this time with comments on Greenland's control. He stated that ownership and control of the autonomous Danish territory are "very important" for the United States.

According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Monday, December 23, Trump reaffirmed his stance on Greenland while announcing the appointment of PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump wrote that the United States believes it is "very important" to take control and ownership of Greenland for global security and freedom. He also praised Ken Howery as an excellent representative for the United States.

Although Greenland gained autonomy from Denmark in 1979, it still depends on Copenhagen for foreign affairs, security, and financial matters. The region is known for its vast reserves of uranium, gold, oil, and gas.

In 1946, former U.S. President Harry Truman offered Denmark $100 million in gold to purchase Greenland.

In 2019, then-President Donald Trump expressed interest in buying the island, which led to a brief diplomatic rift between Washington and Copenhagen. As a result, Trump had to cancel his state visit to Denmark.
