As part of the ceasefire between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel, 183 Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli jails today. This was reported by Al Jazeera.
The Palestinian Prisoners Media Office confirmed the release of the 183 prisoners in a new statement.
According to the statement, among the 183 prisoners, 18 were serving life sentences, 54 had received long-term prison sentences, and the remaining 11 were detained after the war broke out in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
Earlier, it was announced that 90 Palestinian prisoners would be released from Israeli prisons on Saturday, but this number has now been increased.
A spokesperson for the Palestinian Prisoners Society, Amani Sarahneh, confirmed the update, stating that Israel will release 183 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Hamas, the Palestinian liberation organization, announced that it would release three more prisoners on Saturday, including two American citizens.
In a Telegram channel, Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for Hamas' armed wing, said that on Saturday (February 1), Yarden Bibas, Keith Seigel, and Ofer Kalderon will be released.
Prior to this, on Thursday, Hamas released eight people, including five Thais and three Israelis. Additionally, 110 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli jails, although Prime Minister Netanyahu delayed the release of the Palestinians beyond the scheduled time.
After 15 months of conflict in Gaza, Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire. In the first phase of the six-week ceasefire, Hamas will release 33 Israeli prisoners in exchange for Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
