After Canada, Mexico, and China, U.S. President Donald Trump has now threatened to impose tariffs on European Union (EU) member states. He stated that tariffs on EU imports would be implemented "very soon."

This information was reported by British news agency Reuters on Monday.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday (February 2), Trump said that U.S. tariffs on goods imported from the European Union would take effect very soon.

The U.S. president accused the EU of "severely disadvantaging" the United States for years.

"They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our agricultural products. They take almost nothing from us, yet we take in millions of their cars, vast amounts of food, and agricultural products," Trump stated.

When asked about a specific timeline, he said, "It will happen very soon," though he did not provide an exact date. Trump added, "Almost every country has been taking advantage of the United States. We have trade deficits with nearly all of them—not every country, but most. This has to change. It has been unfair."

This is not the first time Trump has threatened tariffs on the EU. In January, he remarked, "The European Union has been very, very unfair to us. So, tariffs are coming. That’s the only way. You’re going to get fairness."

However, the EU has responded to Trump’s threats, warning that if the U.S. unjustly or deliberately imposes tariffs on EU goods, the 27-nation bloc will respond forcefully.

A spokesperson from the EU made this statement on Sunday while addressing Trump’s tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico.

Despite threatening tariffs on the EU, Trump hinted that the UK might be exempt for now. "We are working on a deal with the UK," he said.

Trump also praised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying, "He has been very cooperative. We have had several meetings, and we've had a lot of discussions over the phone. We are making good progress, and we will see if we can balance our trade relationship."
