Due to rain in the nation's capital, Dhaka's air quality was rated as "moderate" on Wednesday morning.

At 9:06am, Dhaka, with an air quality index (AQI) score of 57, was ranked 35th among the cities with the poorest air quality in the world.

A score of 0 to 50 on the AQI is regarded as "good," while a score of 50 to 100 is regarded as "moderate."

The top three cities on the list were Kuching, Malaysia, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Lahore, Pakistan, with AQI ratings of 153, 152, and 151, respectively.

A score of 101 to 200 is deemed "unhealthy," especially for those who are more vulnerable.

Similar to this, an AQI level of 201 to 300 is deemed "poor," while 301 to 400 is deemed "hazardous," causing significant health hazards to locals.

Governmental organizations utilize the AQI, an indicator for monitoring daily air quality, to let the public know how safe or polluted the air in a particular city is and what potential health impacts they should be aware of.

The AQI score in Bangladesh is based on five criterion pollutants: ozone, NO2, CO, SO2, and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5).

Air pollution has always been a problem in Dhaka. Winter is often when the air quality deteriorates, and monsoon season is when it gets better.

One of the leading causes of mortality and disability globally continues to be air pollution.

Per the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, largely as a result of increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and acute respiratory infections.
