Bangladesh Meteorological Department has warned the maritime ports and asked the Payra and Chattogram Port to raise the danger signal to 7 as the Cyclone Hamoon intensified.

The Met Office also asked the Cox’s Bazar port to hoist danger signal No. 6 and Mongla Port to hoist signal No. 5.

The coastal districts of Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirozpur, Jhalakathi, Chattogram and Feni will fall under the danger signal No. 7

The severe cyclonic storm Hamoon over the northwest bay and adjoining area moved northeast and was centred at 9 am on Tuesday about 445 km west-southwest of Chattogram Port, 410 km west-southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port, 325 km southwest of Mongla Port and 310 km southwest of Payra Port.

It is likely to move north-northeast and may cross the Barishal-Chattogram coast near Bhola by Wednesday afternoon as a cyclonic storm.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kilometres of the storm centre is about 90 kph, rising to 110 kph in gusts and squalls. The sea will remain high near the severe cyclone centre, the Met Office said.

Under the effect of Cyclone Hamoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds may continue over the north bay and coastal areas.

The low lying areas of the coastal districts of Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Chattogram, Noakhali, Feni, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind-driven surges about 3-5 feet high.

Due to very heavy rainfall, landslides may occur in the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari, the Met Office warned.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the north bay and deep sea were advised to remain in port until further notice.
