Heat Wave Likely To Continue: Meteorological Department

A mild to moderate heatwave has been sweeping over four divisions of the country including Dhaka for three days. The Meteorological Department has said that the temperature may rise in these areas for the next two to three days. Therefore, the Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning or heat alert in these areas. Meteorologist Dr. Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed the news on Thursday morning.

A mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna divisions and it may spread. Due to the increase of moisture incursion, the discomfort may increase, said the met office.

Besides, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at one or two places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and the districts of Kishoreganj and  Brahmanbaria with hails at isolated places.

Earlier a circular signed by Bazlur Rashid, Meteorologist of the BMD was issued on Wednesday. It is said that the ongoing heatwave over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barishal divisions may continue for the next 72 hours. It may be more widespread in surrounding areas.

According to the Meteorological Department, if the temperature is between 36 and 37.9 degrees Celsius, it is called a mild heat wave. Temperatures between 38 and 39.9 degrees Celsius are called moderate heat waves. A severe heat wave is called when the temperature is between 40 and 41.9 degrees Celsius. And it is very severe if it is 42 degrees or more.

Sources from the Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility that the temperature will drop slightly on April 8 and 9. There may be light rain.

Meteorologist Md. Bajlur Rashid told Prothom Alo that normal drizzle will not be able to reduce this temperature, it needs heavy rain. But there is not much chance of heavy rain.

On Wednesday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded at Chuadanga and Ishurdi at 38.5 degrees Celsius.
