In an unprecedented event, Bangladesh is currently grappling with an intense heatwave, shattering a 76-year-old record for the number of consecutive days experiencing high temperatures.
Meteorologist Omar Faruk reported on Friday morning that this year has seen the highest number of heatwave days since records began in 1948.
A heatwave is defined as two consecutive days where the temperature exceeds 36 degrees Celsius. Depending on the temperature range, it can be categorized as mild, moderate, severe, or extreme.
April alone witnessed 24 days of heatwave conditions across the country.
The heatwave began in the Rajshahi division on April 1, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 39 degrees Celsius until April 4.
Subsequently, the heatwave extended to Dhaka, Khulna, and Rangpur divisions for two consecutive days.
Cox's Bazar and Sitakunda recorded temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius on April 8, followed by a brief respite on April 9 and 10.
However, scorching temperatures returned on April 11 and have persisted since then.
