BCL activist sent to jail for assaulting cop

A Pirojpur court yesterday sent a man to jail on charges of assaulting a police officer in the district’s Indurkani upazila.

The accused -- Toukir, 19, student of Indurkani Degree College -- is a local Chhatra League activist, said Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Indurkani Police Station.

Sub-inspector Manmatho Halder of the police station filed a case against Toukir around 10:00pm on Saturday.

According to the case statement, Toukir and two of his friends were riding a motorbike on Saturday when police officers signaled them to stop at a checkpoint. Ignoring the signal, they tried to cross the checkpoint.

Police then forced them to stop. At this point, Toukir punched an on-duty assistant sub-inspector on his face, the case statement added.

Police then detained Toukir on the spot and later showed him arrested after the case was filed.

Israfil Khan Newaj, general secretary of Indurkani upazila unit Chhatra League, said Toukir was an activist of the party but obtained no post.
