Momen seeks British MPs support for Rohingya repatriation

Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen has sought support from British parliamentarians for ensuring a safe and sustainable return of Rohingya people to their homeland in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State, reports BSS.

He made the urge while a visiting 14-member of the all-party parliamentary group on population, development and reproductive health of British Parliamentarians led by Ann Mette Kjaerby called on him at the foreign ministry on Sunday, a press release said here today.

During the meeting, the foreign minister outlined the financial and environmental impact that Bangladesh is currently undergoing for hosting the forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

Momen hoped that the UK will continue to support Bangladesh in international forums especially in the United Nations for creating pressure on Myanmar in order to ensure a sustainable return of the Rohingyas.

He also apprised the delegation of Bangladesh development in various socio-economic sectors specially in reducing child and maternal mortality as well as population growth rates.

Momen also mentioned the role of Bangladeshi British diaspora in the development of both Bangladesh and their host countries.

The Foreign Minister expressed his hope that cooperation between Bangladesh and the UK in the field of implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Delta Plan-2100 will be continued in the days to come.

The UK MPs assured that London will continue to work with Dhaka for ensuring the safe return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

They commended Bangladesh’s role in hosting 1.1 million Rohingyas with shelter and all kinds of humanitarian assistance.

The delegation members lauded Bangladesh’s remarkable achievements in the fields of child and maternal health, poverty reduction, women empowerment, technology, and capacity building.

The British Parliamentarians are visiting Bangladesh on a study tour on sexual and reproductive health.
