DU Student Rape Suspect 'Serial Rapist': RAB

The suspect arrested in relation to the rape of a second-year Dhaka University student is a ‘drug addict and serial-rapist,’ says Rapid Action Battalion.

RAB Legal and Media Wing chief Sarwar Bin Kasem revealed the information during a media call on Wednesday (Jan 8). 

On Tuesday (Jan 7) RAB arrested Majnu,30, from Shewra rail crossing near Kurmitola. They said that he himself admitted to the crime and the victim identified him after seeing a photograph.

“Majnu is a serial rapist. He has committed the same crime at the same spot before,” he said before adding that he raped beggars and disabled women and threatened to kill them

“He admitted that he was alone and the victim said the same,” he said.

The RAB official said that on Sunday (Jan 5) evening, Majnu saw the victim after coming out from Kurmitola Hospital and followed her. 

According to RAB, the suspect is illiterate and lost two of his teeth after falling off a train. “He hasn’t been able to re-marry after his wife died and has been committing this sort of crime since.”

Responding to queries on the arrest, Kasem said, “We were able to arrest him through the victim’s mobile phone.” 

He said that Majnu sold the mobile with a broken display to a woman named Aruna who took it to a man named Khairul to get fixed.

“RAB first arrested Aruna and Khairul and then arrested Majnu based on the information they gave,” he said. 

According to the case dossier, the rapist is 5 foot 4 inches, of medium built and short hair. He was wearing old pants and black jacket.

On Sunday (Jan 5), the victim, second-year student at DU was followed by an unknown person after getting down from the bus at Kurmitola bus stand.

Her classmate said that she was picked up midway around 7 to 8 pm and taken to a nearby quiet place and raped.  

She got back to consciousness around 10 pm after which she went to her friend's house from where she was admitted to DMCH around midnight.
