Abrar Murder: Fugitive Suspect Surrenders

A fugitive suspect has been sent to jail following his surrender in court in the killing of the student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Abrar Fahad.

After axing his bail request today, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court sent Morshed Amatya Islam to jail.

The court ordered media circulars on November 18 against the four suspects who had fled: Morsheduzzaman Jishan, Eheshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amatya Islam and Mostafa Rafid.

The same tribunal ordered a freeze on these four suspects ' equity on Dec 3.

The investigators charged 25 people for the murder on 13 November. Police said it was revealed during the investigation that 11 people were actually involved in the murder while the majority of the 14 were involved in some way or the other. The prosecutors issued the charge sheet with the court on the behalf of 60 witnesses and 21 pieces of evidence.

The police pressed charges against Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Shokal, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Meftahul Islam Jion, Muntasir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mujahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Moniruzzaman Monir, Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Majedul Islam, Shamim Billah, Meyaj Abu Huraira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Ishtiak Ahmed Munna, Amit Saha, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu and Rafi.

On Oct 7, Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was beaten to death inside his dormitory.

A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League's BUET unit leaders and activists bludgeoned Abrar to death allegedly for his social media post criticizing the Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of Feni River.

Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with the capital's Chawkbazar police the day of the murder.

The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for him and capital punishment for the murderers.

The BUET authorities also banned the activities of all political student bodies on the campus amid the student protest.
