A Dhaka court today took cognizance of the charge against expelled Jubo League leader Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan in an arms case.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka accepted the charges against Khalid, who was produced before the court.

The judge also fixed February 12 for the next hearing of the case.

Earlier on January 8, the Dhaka court could not take cognizance of the charge against him Khalid as jail authorities failed to produce him before the court due to Bishwa Ijtema.

On November 19 last year, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Assistant Superintendent of police Belayet Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka in the case.

Rab members arrested Khalid, organising secretary Jubo League’s Dhaka South unit and also the president of Youngmen’s Football Club, from his Gulshan residence on September 18, 2019 in the wake of the crackdown at a casino in the football club. Rab also seized arms, bullets and yaba pills from his residence.

Jubo League on September 20 last year expelled Khalid for breaching the organisation’s discipline and his involvement in anti-social activities.

Khalid’s arrest came after a Rab mobile court detained and sentenced 142 people after raiding the ''casino'' in Fakirerpool Youngmen’s Club and seized some apparently blackjack tables, slot machines, Tk 24.29 lakh in cash, yaba pills, and some bottles of liquor around 4:30pm on September 18 last year.

The elite force also raided at least five clubs in the city on that date and detained and sentenced 182 people in connection with running “casinos”, gambling, and drug abuse, and sealed off at least two clubs.

Later a total of four cases were filed against Khalid, three of the cases were filed with Gulshan Police Station while another with Motijheel Police Station.

The cases were filed under the Firearms Act, the Narcotics Control Act and Money Laundering Act.
