Man Burned To Death for Blackmailing Woman

A man was burned for blackmailing a woman over an extra-marital affair after he was called to a remote paddy field in Barokol village under Bogura’s Dupchanchia Upazila on February 4.

The deceased was identified as Selim Pramanik (32), son of Kafir Uddin, of Khidirpara village of the upazila.

Police recovered Selim’s burnt and throat-slit body from a forested area in another village named Beruj in the same upazila around 3:00pm on February 5.

The locals could not initially recognize the body. Selim’s father was able to identify him later, police said in a press conference today at 1:00 pm at the Bogura Police Superintendent’s office.

Police also recovered Selim’s mobile phone and wallet, and a knife from the spot.

Selim’s father filed a case against unknown miscreants on February 5.

Upon investigation, police found that the murder was a result of an extra-marital affair. A team of police’s detective branch arrested two -- Abdur Rahman (50) and his daughter Rupali Begum (25), both residents of the same village -- over this case, said police.

Rupali and her father will be presented at court today for their statement, and police will pray for ten days’ remand to get further information, said police.

During primary interrogation, the two admitted to killing Selim, said Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, superintendent of police (Bogura).

Quoting Rupali and her father, the SP said, “Rupali’s husband Ekramul had been living in Saudi Arabia for work for the last year and half. Selim and Rupali were in a relationship during that time. Later on, Selim insisted that Rupali marry him, but she did not agree.”

Selim then began to blackmail her with hidden camera footage of the two being intimate, he added.

Later, Rupali confided in her father, and the two plotted to kill Selim, said the SP.

As part of their plan, Rupali agreed to marry him and called Selim to meet her at her friend’s house at Beruj village.

On February 4, around 6:30pm, Selim went near a paddy field at Barokol village to meet Rupali, where she handed him over to her father and three other associates.

Later, they tied up Selim’s hands and legs with scotch tape, slit his throat with a knife and set him on fire, hoping that no one would recognise him, said the SP.
