A Dhaka court issued arrest warrants against the wife and younger brother of former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman on charges of collecting illicit money.
Dhaka Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes released the warrants on Sunday (Feb 9), following cognizance of the indictment sheets against Sohelia Anar Ratna and Mahbubur Rahman Swapan.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Mahmudur Rahman Jahangir said that the court has referred the matter to the Special Judge Court of Dhaka 4, and set Mar 3 for the next trial.
The suspended DIG and his nephew Dhaka's Kotwali Police Station's Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan, are currently in jail over the corruption case.
The case's investigating director, ACC Administrator Manjur Morshed, also sent the charging papers against them to the court on Jan 30th, 2020.
The ACC opened an investigation into DIG Mizan's riches in 2018, after he was removed from duties on charges of torturing a minor.
On Jun 20, 2019, a Dhaka court ordered that DIG Mizan’s assets be confiscated and bank accounts should be frozen.
On Jun 24 of the same year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman and three of his family members for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 32.8 million.
Others accused in the case include DIG Mizan’s wife Sohelia, his younger brother Mahbubur and nephew Mahmudul.
