2 Including AL Man Held with 1,440 Kilogrammes of Relief Rice

A mobile court today sentenced a local leader of Awami League and a businessman to one-month imprisonment each for misappropriating 1,440 kilograms of rice for relief in the Singra Upazila of Natore.

The two were imprisoned after they were detained with around 48 sacks of relief food, media reports.

The arrestees are Awal Hossain Swapan, Secretary of Science and Technology for Sukash Union Parishad AL, and Rahmat Ali, a rice trader.

They're both from the Sukash Union in the Upazila.

Singra Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nasrin Banu said the rice was seized from Rahmat's relative's house today.

Throughout the interrogation, Rahmat told them he had bought the rice from Swapan, she added.

Later, both Rahmat and Swapan were arrested and imprisoned for one month by a mobile court presided by UNO and Executive Magistrate Nasrin Banu.

The rice was meant to be distributed to the needy and the very needy and priced at Tk 10 per kg as part of the Government's social protection programs.
