Dhaka’s Air Quality Still Unhealthy

Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, rated fourth-worst in the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Friday morning.

The city had a ranking of 153 at 8:18 a.m., meaning that the air quality was 'unhealthy.'

When the AQI value is between 150 and 200, anyone will begin to feel health effects.

Thailand’s Chiang Mai, China’s Chongqing and Ukraine’s Kyiv  occupied the first three spots in the list of cities with the worst air quality with AQI scores of 165, 163 and 158 respectively

The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.

In Bangladesh, the AQI is focused on five pollutant criteria-Particle Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone (O3).

National recommendations on air quality for these pollutants have also been established by the Department of the Environment. These standards are meant to guard against adverse impacts on human well-being.

Dhaka has been grappling with air pollution for a long time. The air quality normally improves during the monsoon season.
