Japan Supports Tk 24mn to 3 Grass-Roots Human Security Projects

The Government of Japan has extended a grant of about Tk 24 million to three Bangladeshi NGOs by Grass-roots Human Protection Projects (GGHSP).

The NGOs are Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS), Prisma Bangladesh Foundation (PRISM) and Trust for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed  (TRP).

TMSS has received a grant of approximately Tk 7 million for the "Fund for the Construction of Medical Equipment to Improve the Capability of Coronary and Trauma Facilities of the Bogura District."

Cardiovascular diseases and road traffic accidents are some of the leading causes of death and disability in Bogura, said the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka.

TMSS Medical College and Rafatullah Community Hospital (TMC&RCH) situated adjacent to the Rangpur highway in the district of Bogura have been offering outside, indoor and emergency medical services to citizens at low cost

In order to enhance coronary and trauma treatment in TMC-RCH, TMSS obtained a grant for the procurement of C-Arm system, ETT system and trauma manikin.

C-Arm will be used to assist surgeries for cardiac surgery and treatment of trauma, whereas ETT machine will allow patients with cardiac conditions to have efficient diagnosis and treatment.

At least 1,600 patients will benefit next year from the C-Arm and ETT equipment, while 360 staff will be equipped annually for the trauma manikin.

PRISM has earned a grant of approximately Tk 7 million for the "Plan for the Implementation of Clinical Waste Management Equipment in Rajshahi County."

In Rajshahi city, there was no Medical Waste Management plant for 205 healthcare Establishments.

Due to new infrastructure improvements, the number of hospitals and clinics in the metropolitan region is rising, and careful handling of medical waste is necessary to reduce the possibility of infection, the Embassy stated.

Under this initiative, PRISM must build an Autoclave, a Boiler and two Collection Vehicles in its Medical Waste Management Facility.

Rajshahi City Corporation signed MoU with PRISM to support this project.

These products can contribute for improving hygiene and safety of Rajshahi City, and about 450,000 citizens will be benefitted from this project, said the Embassy.

TRP has been awarded the grant of approximately Tk 10 million for “The Project for Construction of the Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities in Moulvibazar District”.

Through this project, TRP will construct the ground floor of a new rehabilitation centre for poor people with disabilities in Moulvibazar.

Their current rehabilitation centre in Moulvibazar was too small compared to the number of patients, and some patients has to go to TRP’s Dhaka Centre for t proper treatment.

The people with disabilities are forced to risk their health by travelling long distance to Dhaka, so it is necessary to expand the capacity of the Moulvibazar centre.

After constructing the new Moulvibazar centre, TRP can provide treatment for 740 patients and vocational training for 40 people with disabilities per year.

Since 1989, Japan has supported 197 NGO projects through its GGHSP (Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects) with a view to improving economic and social human protection at a grassroots level.

The total sum of such GGHSP grants extended to NGOs in Bangladesh to date is approximately $15 million.
