Healthcare Violation

Upazila Administration Shuts Down All Markets in Savar

The Upazila administration shut down all markets in Dhaka's Savar Upazila on Saturday afternoon as they failed to maintain recommended health guidelines in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak.

In another incident, the mobile court fined 31 Tk 62,000 people for a similar offence.

Parvezur Rahman Jumon, UNO of Savar, said they took the decision after monitoring the markets for the last few days.

“Proper healthcare and social distancing were not being maintained in the markets. That prompted the authorities to take the decision,” he said, adding that those shops that sell essentials, raw materials, and medicine will be out of the purview of the order.

Meanwhile, in Chuadanga, at least 31 buyers and sellers were fined in the district town on Saturday when they carried out their business operations in violation of the authorities' instructions.

The information was confirmed by Jannatul Ferdous, the Executive Magistrate at the Deputy Commissioner's Office.

On Thursday, the district administration ordered all merchants not to operate their shops and markets in the district town until further notice.

Without paying some heed to the orders, 31 citizens were selling within a locked market and on the roof without following minimum health guidelines.

“On information, we went to the spot, broke into the shop, and fined the 31 through a mobile court,” Jannatul Ferdous said, adding that they were fined under the Communicable Diseases (Prevention, Control, and Eradication) Act 2018.

According to the civil surgeon’s offices, the district has so far recorded 78 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
