COVID-19 Cases Top 50,000; Deaths Now 709

Bangladesh has seen the biggest daily spike in the number of new coronavirus infections on Tuesday.

Health authorities confirmed the detection of 2,911 cases in the 24-hour period until the morning, taking the number of confirmed cases in the country to 52,445.

"During this period, 37 patients died, bringing the death count to 709," said Prof. Nasima Sultana, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Health Services (DGHS), during a regular online briefing.

In the last 24 hours, 52 coronavirus testing laboratories across the country tested 12,704 samples, she added.

Bangladesh confirmed its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

Global situation

The global death toll from Covid-19 reached 375,526 on Tuesday morning while the confirmed cases were 6,265,496, according to the Centre for System Science and Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University.

According to JHU data, Brazil has come up to the second position after the US with 526,447 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Tuesday. The South American country counted 29,937 deaths from the virus till the date.

Coronavirus cases were first recorded in China in December of last year. The World Health Organisation ( WHO ) declared the crisis of coronavirus a pandemic on 11 March.
