5 Denied Bail in Abrar Fahad Murder Case

A virtual court in Dhaka has denied bail petitions of five accused in BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 passed the order on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday,  lawyers of Mehedi Hasan Rasel, a 13th batch student of the l engineering department and general sectary of Buet BCL; Muhtasim Fuad, a 14th batch student of the l engineering department and Buet BCL vice-president; ASM Nazmus Sadat, a 17th batch student of mechanical engineering department; Morshed Amartya Islam, a 17th batch student of mechanical engineering department; and SM Mahmud Setu, a 14th batch student of the ical engineering department, submitted separate bail petitions through email.

On 18 March, Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge court, which was holding a hearing in the case initially, transferred it to Dhaka speedy trial tribunal-1, two days after public security division of home ministry issued a notification in this regard.

Law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq on 12 March signed necessary documents to transfer the case to the speedy trial tribunal.

Earlier on 13 November 2019, the court took into cognizance the charge sheet in the case filed by Detective Branch (DB) of police against 25 accused.

The 25 accused are – Mehedi Hasan Russel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Md Mehedi Hasan Robin, Md Meftahul Islam Jeon, Muntassir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Md Muzahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Md Moniruzzaman Monir, Md Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md Mazedul Islam, Shamim Billah, Moaj Abu Hurayra, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Istiak Ahammed Munna, Amit Saha, Md Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu, Morsheduzzaman Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amatya Islam and Mostaba Rafid.

According to police, of the 25 accused, 11 took part in the murder directly and the others played different roles in the crime. Of those arrested, eight have given confessional statements before the t.

Abrar, 22, was found dead on a staircase of Buet’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7, after he was taken to the dormitory’s Room No 2011 around 8 pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly by Chhatra League men late into the night.

Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed the murder case at Chawkbazar Police Station against 19 people, mostly leaders, and activists of Buet Chhatra League unit.

Amid students’ protest, the university on October 11 banned all political activities on campus and suspended the 19 students accused in the case.
