COVID-19 Death Toll Nears 1,000

Bangladesh continues to see a quick surge in the number of coronavirus cases on the 94th day since the virus first emerged in the country as it sees the highest detection and deaths in a single day on Tuesday.

Health authorities confirmed the detection of 3,171 cases in the 24-hour period on Monday.

The refreshed number of confirmed cases in the country now stands 71,675.

"During this period, 45 patients died, bringing the death count to 975," said Prof. Nasima Sultana, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Health Services (DGHS), during a regular online briefing.

Meanwhile, 777 more people recovered from the COVID-19 disease in this period, taking the total number of recovered patients to 15,336.

In the last 24 hours, 55 coronavirus testing laboratories across the country tested 14,664 samples, she added.

Bangladesh confirmed its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.
