Mohammed Nasim Passes Away

Former health minister Mohammed Nasim passed away at a hospital in the capital on Saturday morning.

He breathed his last at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in Shyamoli at around 11:00 am, Nasim’s son Tanvir Shakil said.

Infected with Covid-19 and later suffering from a stroke, Nasim had been in a "deep coma" since June 5.

On Friday, the Awami League presidium member underwent a successful surgery after his condition worsened following a stroke while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier on Jun 1, Nasim was admitted to Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in Shyamoli with COVID-19 symptoms, including a fever and a cold.

A day after, his health condition improved and he was scheduled to be shifted to a cabin from the ICU.

On June 2, Nasim tested positive for coronavirus.

Nasim has been acting as the convenor for the 14-party ruling alliance built around the heft of Awami League.

Nasim, the son of M Mansur Ali, one of the four national leaders killed in jail on Nov 3, 1975, had also served as home minister for the Awami League government in 1996.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina subsequently appointed him as a health minister during her government’s next tenure.
