Burnt Journo' Moazzem Hossain Nannu Dies

Senior journalist Moazzem Hossain Nannu, who sustained severe burn injuries in a fire at his home in Dhaka's Aftabnagar area early Friday, passed away this morning.

He breathed his last at 8:20am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost in-charge Inspector Md Bachchu Miah confirmed the news.

Moazzem Hossain Nannu, the chief of crime beat of the Daily Jugantor, was admitted to the institute with 60% burns after the incident.

The senior journalist was the former general secretary of the Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).

On January 2, Nannu’s son Shapnil Ahmed Piash, 26, died after the compressor of an air-conditioner (AC) exploded in their house.

Inspector Bachchu Miah said the reason behind the fire could not be ascertained yet, but he surmised that the fire might have originated from gas leakage.

Nannu's wife Pallabi said he went to their son's room around 3am and opened the door.

"As soon as he switched on the light of the room, the fire broke out with a loud bang," she said adding that Nannu rushed to the bathroom and stood under the shower to save himself, but he was still severely burnt.
