Bangladesh Improves on Global Peace Index

Bangladesh has moved 7 steps up in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2020, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

This is the fourteenth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.

Bangladesh has ranked 97th out of 163 countries with a global score of 2.121 while in last year its position was 101 with a score of 2.128, according to the report.

Among South Asia countries, Bangladesh remains in fourth place leaving behind India (139th place), Pakistan (152nd place) and Afghanistan (163rd place), and now sits behind Bhutan (1.501), Sri Lanka (1.974) and Nepal (1.974).

In South Asia, Bhutan has been ranked the top position followed by Nepal and Sri Lanka.

India, Pakistan and Afghanistan have been ranked the fifth, sixth and seventh positions respectively.

Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark.

Afghanistan is now the least peaceful country in the world.
