Flood Situation Worsens in Sunamganj; 11 Upazilas Flooded

Flood water enters 50 pc houses in district town

Flash floods, caused by heavy rains and upstream water, overwhelmed the town of Sunamganj and 11 Upazilas of the district, leaving thousands of citizens marooned.

Flood water continued to grow in Nabinagar, Soloshahar, Kajir level, Ukil para, Boropata, Tegharia, Sahebbabir ghat, Bihari level, Sultanpur, Purbo o Poschimpara and other areas of the district center.

Shops and markets remained shut in Paschimbazar, Modhyobazar, Purbobaar areas in the town.

Road communications on the Sunamganj-Bishwambharpur route, Tahirpur-Anwarpur route, Sunamganj-Ambari road and Sunamganj-Doarabazar road have been disrupted, whereas some villages of Dharmapasha Upazila's Chamardi union have gone under deep water.

Sobibur Rahman, Executive Engineer, Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB), said the Surma River was flowing 46 cm above the danger point at 6 pm on Saturday, while the Jadukata River was flowing 57 cm above the hazard level.

Rahman also said that 190 mm of rain was recorded in Sunamganj for the last 24 hours until Saturday night, while 902 mm of rain, the maximum of the season, had been registered in Cherapujni in India for 72 hours until Saturday noon.

Dharmapasha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muntasir Hasan Palash said that eight families took shelter in a nearby madrasah and that food were provided.

Bishwambharpur UNO Samir Bishwas said floodwater entered the ground floor of his house.

In the meantime, the floodwaters began to reach the village of Sohala in Tahirpur Upazila, as the bank collapsed on the south side of the settlement.

District Water Development Board (WDB) sources recorded that water continues to increase in the district 's rivers Surma, Jadukata, Chalti, Khasiamara, Chelanadi, Maharam, Rokti, Boulai and Someshwari.

Sunamganj Municipality Mayor Nader Bakht said he toured various parts of the municipality and noticed that water entered fifty percent of the town's homes.

Deputy Commissioner Md Abdul Ahad said that the District Disaster Management Committee had a meeting on Saturday night.

Shelter Centre and Control Rooms were opened in each upazila of the district, said the DC adding that 410mts rice, Tk 29.70lakh was allotted for food-hit areas.
