Buriganga Launch Capsize: 1 More Body Found; Death Toll Reaches 33

Rescue workers recovered one more body from Buriganga at noon on Tuesday, the day after a launch capsized in the river near Shyambazar of old Dhaka.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been identified.

With this, the death toll from the boat accident stood at 33.

However, rescue operations are continuing for the second day after a deadly crash between two launches on the Buriganga River in Dhaka killed 32 people on Monday.

The divers resumed their search at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, after an hour-long break after a night search on Monday, Kamrul Hasan, a duty officer in the Fire Service Control Room, said.

Morning Bird, with more than 50 passengers on board, departed Munshiganj's Kathpotti for the capital at 7:30 a.m. on Monday and arrived near Shyambazar just after 9 a.m.

Moyur-2, a larger vessel from Chandpur, which was moving up in reverse, slammed Morning Bird. Morning Bird went upside down and sank in the next few seconds.

The sunken launch has been brought near the shore in the morning through BIWTA-led efforts.  A small rescue ship, Duranta, has been brought in for assistance.

The Naval Police lodged a complaint against the launch capsize in the Buriganga River on Tuesday, raising allegations of "negligent murder" against seven men.

The government appointed a seven-strong commission, led by a joint secretary of the shipping ministry, to inquire into the accident.
