Quota System in Govt Jobs Comes to an End

The quota system for recruitment for government jobs will no longer exist in Bangladesh. The quota system came to an end with the results of the 38th BCS exam.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice to eliminate quotas for class I and class II government jobs in accordance with the 2018 decision, following massive protests by students demanding reforms to the quota system, reports the media.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Public Service Commission released the final results of the 38th BCS exams following the old quota system, recommending 2,204 people for government jobs.

Responding to a question about the end of the quota era in Bangladesh, PSC Chairman Mohammad Sadiq, “Yes, it appears to have come to an end.”

“We will follow the amended rules from now,” he said.

The quotas will remain unchanged for the people with disabilities, Cabinet Secretary Mohammed Shafiul Alam had said earlier during a media briefing on the development.

To a question about that, Sadiq said: “I can’t answer that question. We will follow the order issued by the government.”

“The quota era in BCS has come to an end unless the government takes any new decision on the quota system. Now the way for talented students to get government jobs will be easier than before,” a PSC official said.

Previous rules allowed the government to preserve 56% of positions under different quotas: 30% for families of freedom fighters, 10% for women, 10% for disadvantaged districts, 5% for small ethnic groups, and 1% for people with disabilities.

The amendment to the system came in the wake of a months-long campaign that led to the arrests of protest leaders and activists.
