Former DU Vice-Chancellor Emajuddin Ahmed Dies

Professor Emajuddin Ahmed died of brain haemorrhage in a hospital in the capital on Friday morning. He was 88 years old.

At 5.45 am, he breathed last at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of LabAid Hospital while receiving treatment.

Emajuddin Ahmed, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, fell ill at 2.30 a.m. and was taken to Lab Aid Hospital in Dhanmondi after suffering a stroke, said Abu Naser Muhammad Rahmatullah, member of the BNP Executive Committee.

Emajuddin’s first namaz-e-janaza will be held at Bajme Kaderia Jame Mosque after Jummah prayers, close to his residence in Dhaka’s Katabon area, and the second one will be held at the Dhaka University mosque after Asr.

The professor will be buried next to his wife in the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard.

Ahmed, a political scientist, was born in Maldaha in 1932, and his family moved to Chapainawabganj after partitioning India.

After completing his early education in Rajshahi, he finished post-graduation in political science and began to teach at Rajshahi College. Following higher studies abroad, Ahmed joined the Political Science Department of Dhaka University in 1970.

Prof Emajuddin served as the 21st Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University from 1992 to 1996. Upon his retirement in 1998, he continued to teach.

In 1992, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak in the category of education.
