Waterlogging Triggered by Overnight Rains Hampers Dhaka Life

Torrential monsoon rain from Sunday midnight to Monday morning swamped several parts of the capital, disturbing people's movements and causing traffic chaos.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, 63 mm of rain was recorded in the capital between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. In addition, 19 mm of rain has been recorded in the last 24 hours until 6 a.m. today, meteorologist Omar Faruk said, reports UNB.

Many streets, lanes and by-lanes in the capital went under ankle to knee-deep water.

People, mainly office-goers and those who went out of their homes for a variety of work, find themselves in difficulty in the morning because of waterlogging and traffic jam.

Md Ashraf, Operation Manager of Alif Paribahan, said Mirpur-10 to Gulchakkar, Sewrapara, Kazipara section of Begum Rokeya Sarani, Agargaon crossing, Bijoy Sarani crossing, Kalabagan, Asad Gate on Mirpur have been flooded. 

Shantinagar, Mowchak crossing, Kakrail even witnessed a similar incident, said traffic inspector Md Asad, who was on duty in Shantinagar.

He said that since morning, a variety of vehicles remained stuck on various city streets owing to waterlogging.

According to the Met office media release, light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places across Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions; at other locations across Rajshahi and Barishal divisions, and at a few places across Dhaka and Khulna divisions with relatively strong to severe falls across the country.

Due to active monsoon, all maritime ports of Bangladesh have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No 3.

Rain or thunder showers are likely to continue over the next two days.
