Malaysia Court Puts Bangladeshi Youth Rayhan on 14-Day Remand

Bangladeshi youth Rayhan Kabir, who made numerous allegations against the Malaysian authorities through a documentary released by Al Jazeera, has been asked to assist in the investigation for 14 days, according to the Malaysian news portal Tekdeeps.com.

Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said Md Rayhan was arrested at 5:45 p.m. yesterday in Setapak by the Operations Intelligence Unit of the Malaysian Immigration Department (Immigration) Putrajaya before being handed over to the police at 6:00 p.m.

“Authorities had arrested the man, yesterday, and he was remanded for 14 days to assist in the investigation, starting today.

“We will ensure the investigation is done as best as possible and then take appropriate action,” he said.

He said this at a press conference following the election of the Joint Council of the Malaysian Volunteer Department (RELA) Larut, Matang and Selama to Dewan Semai Bakti, FELDA Ijok, here today.

On 7 July, the Malaysian Immigration Department requested assistance from the public in monitoring Md Rayhan to assist in the investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In a special report published by Al Jazeera, a number of claims and complaints were made against the Malaysian authorities about the treatment of illegal immigrants (PATI) during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (PKP) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Commenting further, Hamzah said, his party is taking the matter seriously because it involves the identity and reputation of the country.

He stressed that any foreigner living and working in Malaysia must comply with the laws of the country by having valid documents.
