August 17 JMB Attack: 15 Years of Serial Blasts across the Country

August 17 marks the 15th anniversary of the nationwide series of bombings. On this day in 2005, the banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) carried out simultaneous bombings in 63 districts of the country.

At least two people were killed and 104 others were injured in a series of bomb blasts at 500 spots in all districts except Munshiganj around 11 pm on the same day.

159 cases were filed across the country after the series of bombings. However, 96 cases have been disposed of in the last 15 years but 47 cases are still pending. 

According to the police headquarters, out of 159 cases of series bombings across the country, 16 were in DMP, eight in CMP, four in RMP, three in KMP, 12 in BMP, 10 in SMP, 23 in Dhaka Range, 11 in Chittagong Range, 7 in Rajshahi Range, According to the police headquarters, out of 159 cases of series bombings across the country, 16 were in DMP, eight in CMP, four in RMP, three in KMP, 12 in BMP, 10 in SMP, 23 in Dhaka Range, 11 in Chittagong Range, 2 in Rajshahi Range and 7 in Rajshahi Range, 7 cases in Barisal Range, 23 in Khulna, 16 in Sylhet Range, eight in Rangpur Range, six in Mymensingh Range and three in Railway Range cases were filed. 

Charge sheets have been filed in 143 of these cases from 2005 to August 16 this year. In the remaining 16 cases, the final report was given as the accused could not be identified even though the incident was true.

There were 130 defendants in the cases. A total of 981 people were arrested through various raids. Charge sheets have been filed against 1,072 people. Among the accused, 322 have been sentenced to different terms. Of these, 15 people have been sentenced to death. 358 accused have been released and 133 accused are out on bail.

According to the police headquarters, 18 cases were filed in the DMP in connection with the series of bombings. Of these, five cases have been disposed of and final reports of six cases have been given. Seven cases are still pending in the Dhaka Judicial Court.
