17 Die As Trawler Sinks in Netrakona

Seventeen people drowned as a trawler capsized in a haor in Madan Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The trawler carrying a group of Madrasa teachers and students, who came to visit Gobindasri Rajali Kanda haor, sank in the water body around 12pm amid inclement weather, said Ramijul Haque, officer-in-charge of Madan Police Station.

Locals carried out the primary rescue operation. Later, local fire service and police members took part in the rescue operation.

Bodies of 17 people including six children were retrieved from the spot.

Besides, a rescue operation is going as some other tourists remained missing, said the OC.

Madan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bulbul Ahmed Talukder said that 17 bodies have been recovered so far. Two are missing. They are yet to be identified. There were 48 passengers in the trawler, he added
