Maldives Repatriates 4,582 BD Expats So Far amid Pandemic

Maldives so far have repatriated 4,582 Bangladeshi workers in the wake of the current Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Maldivian media.

They were 'undocumented,' said the Maldivian news site rajjee.mv, quoting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country.

The Maldivian government plans to repatriate more than 20,000 illegal employees before the end of the year.

Last Monday, the Maldives repatriated 200 Bangladeshi citizens who were still undocumented, according to the report.

The Maldives Government has repatriated Bangladeshi nationals in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the High Commission of Bangladesh in the Maldives and with the help of the Government of Bangladesh.

Previously, the Maldives government announced that about 100,000 migrant employees live unlawfully in the Maldives without proper documents and/or passports.

Bangladeshis are estimated to be the majority of expatriates residing in the island nation.
