GK Shamim Has Tk 337cr in 180 Bank Accounts!

Construction mogul GK Shamim has Tk 337.30 crore in 180 fixed deposit accounts with different banks, two capital houses and 52 kathas of land worth Tk 41 crore, according to charges brought before the Dhaka court on Wednesday.  

Shamim, the top contractor of government projects, amassed wealth through tender manipulation in government departments and extortion in bus terminals and cattle markets, mentioned the bill filed against him and his seven bodyguards.

Abu Sayeed, an additional special superintendent of organized economic crime unit at Criminal Investigation Department ( CID), who is probing a money-laundering case against Shamim, provided the details to media last night, quoting the charge sheet.

Shamim was trying to siphon off the illegal money abroad, Sayeed added.

On 20 September last year, a Rab squad detained Shamim and his seven bodyguards for bribery and tender abuse.

In the morning, Rab searched his house and office in the capital's Niketon and confiscated eight weapons, a broad ammo cache, around Tk 1,8 crore in cash, $9,000 and 752 Singaporean currency, and a few bottles of international liquor.

The bodyguards are Delwar Hossain, Murad Hossain, Zahidul Islam, Shahidul Islam, Kamal Hossain, Samsad Hossain and Aminul Islam.

The bill indicated that Shamim 's transactions with various local banks were over Tk 6,058.51 crore between 2009 and 2019. Many of the trades were completed in 2018 and 2019.

Of that amount, over Tk 3,042.83 crore was credited and the remainder was debited.

Sayeed said the Tk 337.30 crore in fixed deposit accounts was frozen with court orders while the taka and dollars seized from him in cash were deposited to the government exchequer. Besides, his two houses and around 52 khatas of land were confiscated.

The charge sheet also stated that, between 2009 and 2019, Shamim 's firm GKB and Company had received work orders for 154 projects. Prior to Shamim 's detention, he executed 61 ventures and earned around Tk 743.77 crore in payment. The research of the 93 other Tk 4,810.49 crore schemes is yet to be done.

Shamim is now being treated at the prison cell at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.
