4 Held over Attack on Ghoraghat UNO

Four persons have arrested Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida at Dinajpur in connection with a criminal assault.

They have been arrested early Friday by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police on joint drives from Dinajpur district of Hakimpur and Ghoraghat Upazila, including key accused of the attack, reports media.

The arrested were listed as Asadul Haque, 35, son of Amzad Hossain of Osmanpur village under the same Upazila, leader of Sramik League Ghoraghat Upazila unit, Jahangir Hossain, convener of Ghoraghat Upazila Jubo League, Masud, president of Jubo League union unit, and Polash, Ghoraghat Upazila Parishad night guard.

The law enforcers arrested them analysing CCTV footage of the residence of the UNO.

Tipped off, a police team from Hakimpur, Birampur and Ghoraghat police stations and Rab members conducted a joint drive at Hili area in Hakimpur Upazila Kaliganj about 4:50 am and arrested Asadul, said Wahid Ferdous, Hakimpur Police Station's officer-in-charge.

Later, he was taken to RAB office in Rangpur district.

RAB also arrested Jahangir Alam in another drive in Ghoraghat Upazila of the district.

The pair broke into Thursday's house early hours and one of them was wearing PPE, said Rangpur Area Devdas Bhattacharjee's Deputy Inspector General (DIG).

Fire, RAB and intelligence services began extensive hunt for the attackers shortly after the incident.

They gathered CCTV footage and determined that two people went into the house and carried out the attack.

Wahida Khanam, Ghoraghat's Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), was critically injured early Thursday in an attack by miscreants at her home on the premises of Upazila Parishad.

Her father was injured in the brutal attack, too. They were taken to Hospital and Rangpur Medical College.

Later, the UNO was airlifted from Rangpur to Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force MI-171SH helicopter.

She was admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital, Dhaka.
