Arms Case: Prosecution Seeks Highest Punishment for Papia, Husband

Thursday's prosecution sought the highest penalty (life imprisonment) for the expulsion of the chief of the Jubo Mohila League, Shamima Nur Papia, and her husband, Mafijur Rahman, in an arms case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu appealed after putting his closing argument in the case.

He told the court that they were in a position to prove the allegations against the accused of possessing arms and to pursue the highest penalty for the accused in the case.

Upon completion of the arguments, Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka then scheduled the next hearing in the case on 27 September.

The court on August 23 framed charges in the case.

Investigation officer Arifuzzaman filed an indictment against a couple in the case on 29 June, adding witnesses to 12 people.

On 22 February, RAB arrested Papia and her husband, along with two of their accomplices, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit notes, foreign currencies and some cash.

Later, RAB raided their two luxurious apartments in the capital's Indira Road area and seized a foreign-made gun, two cartridges, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, and Tk58.41 lakh in cash, among other items.
