30,000 People Marooned As Flooding Worsens in N-Districts

In the districts of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram, the flood situation deteriorated, marooning some 30,000 people in 100 chars, islands and river basin villages following the continuous onrush of water from upstream and heavy rainfall.

In the districts of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Natore, Sherpur and Sunamganj, low-lying and char zones were submerged as the major river crossed the danger mark due to upstream water onrush.

According to the Water Development Board (WDB) of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram, since last night, thankfully, the water of the Teesta River has been flowing below the level of danger, as there has been no onrush of upstream water. But the Dharla River's water level rose again, and since last night it has been flowing 39 cm above the danger level.

The water level in major rivers is swelling again, which is slowly creating a flood-like situation by inundating low-lying areas in the Northern and North-Eastern region, WDB said.

In Sadar Upazila, low-lying district areas including Dahgram in Patgram Upazila, Saniajan, Goddimari, Sindurna, Patikapara and Singimari were flooded by Hatibandha Upazila, Bhotmari and Kakina in Kaliganj Upazila, Mohishkhocha and Palashi in Aditmari Upazila, Khuniagach, Rajpur and Gokunda.

Over 500 families were homeless in Kurigram as the flood situation deteriorated again due to the swelling of the major rivers, including Dharla and Teesta.

In addition, flood water flooded many houses and damaged the district's Aman paddy and vegetables.

In 67 points of the district, erosion by Dharala took a serious turn, including Charbazra in ulipur Upazila, Sardob, Moghalbasa in Sadar Upazila, Char Mekli in Phulbari Upazila and Dhaurarkuthi in Bhurungamari Upazila.

In the last two days, some 50 establishments, including a primary school building, have been devoured by the river.
