Gang Rape in MC College: Another Accused Arjun Arrested

Police arrested Arjun Lasker, another accused in a case filed for gang rape in the Sylhet Murari Chand (MC) College dorm on Friday night.

The law enforcement officers arrested Arjun, no. 4 in the case, from Habiganj on Sunday morning.

Earlier, the prime accused, Saifur Rahman, was arrested on Sunday morning from Chatak Upazila in Sunamganj.

A newly married woman was allegedly raped by a group of Chhatra League activists in the Sylhet MC College dorm on Friday night.

The incident took place after the couple went to college on Friday. At the time, four to five teenagers pushed them into the dormitory.

As the husband protested the matter, they beat him up and then took the couple to the college inn at around 8:00 p.m. Shah Paran Police Station (OC) officer Abdul Kayum Chowdhury said that his husband was tied up in the room of the hostel and raped the woman.

Police rescued the couple from the dormitory about 10:30 p.m. and admitted the woman to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, he added.

Later, the victim's husband filed a case with Shah Poran Police Station early Saturday against six accused named and three unnamed accused.

The accused are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Arjun Lasker, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tarek Ahmed and Rabiul Islam.

Among the suspects whose names were mentioned in the case, Saifur, Mahbubur, Arjun and Mahfuzur are students of MC College, while Tarek and Rabiul are outsiders.

Earlier on Saturday, several hundred college students took to the streets, set fire and blocked the road, demanding the immediate arrest of the rapists.

The protesters believed that the accused are involved with the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) but do not hold any office because there is no college committee.

They reported that the authorities kept the College Hostel open while all the educational institutions across the country remained closed during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While the authorities were aware of the illegal activities in the dormitories, the hostels were not shut down, they said.

The protesters also threatened to go for a tougher movement if the police fail to arrest the accused.
