Arms Case against Papia Couple: Court to Deliver Verdict October 12

On 12 October, a Dhaka court fixed to deliver a verdict in an arms case against expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon.  

The date was set by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate KM Imrul Kayes on Sunday.

The prosecution finalized its claims on September 24 and sought the full punishment for Papia and Sumon in the case.

Later, the defence lawyer sought their acquittal.

On 29 June, investigation officer Arifuzzaman, sub-inspector of the Rapid Action Battalion, submitted the case with a charge sheet. On August 23, the allegations were framed.

Twelve persons in the case were identified as witnesses.

On February 23rd, a day after arresting them at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Rab raided two flats belonging to Papia and Sumon.

Counterfeit notes and foreign currencies of around Tk 2.5 lakh were seized from them.

From the two flats on Indira Road in Dhaka, and a presidential suite at a five-star hotel in the capital, around Tk 58 lakh was recovered.

Papia and Sumon, a former leader of the Chhatra League, own two more flats and two plots worth around Tk 2 crore in Narsingdi and a range of luxury vehicles, apart from the luxurious flats in Dhaka.

Three cases were lodged against them, two under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Acts at the Sher-e - Bangla Nagar Police Station and another with the Airport Police under the Special Powers Act-1974.

A case against Papia and her husband for embezzling Tk 6.24 crore was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on August 4.
