Attorney General to Be Laid to Eternal Rest at Intellectuals Graveyard

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam will rest forever at Mirpur Intellectuals Graveyard on Monday after Namaj-e-janaza at the Supreme Court compound.

His Namaj-e-janaza will be held in the compound of the Supreme Court at 11:00 a.m.

Earlier, the body will be carried to his Minister's apartment residence at 8:30 a.m. at Dhaka 's Combined Military Hospital in Eskaton.

Alam breathed his last Sunday evening at the CMH where he was being treated for COVID-19.

The longest-serving Attorney General was admitted to CMH on 4 September after he had been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Mahbubey Alam first transferred to the Intensive Care Unit ( ICU) on September 18, after his pulse rate rose, but two days later, his family members said he was improving.

He was added to ventilator support at the CMH Intensive Care Unit ( ICU) earlier in the day. Mahbubey Alam was admitted to the high-temperature hospital on September 4 and was later tested positive for coronavirus.

He was admitted to the ICU on September 18, after his condition had deteriorated.

He left behind his wife, a journalist son, lawyer daughter and lawyer son-in-law and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn the death.

Mahbubey Alam took over as top law officer of the country in 2009.

Hailing from Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj, Alam was enrolled as a lawyer in 1975. He held a variety of key positions, including the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

He played an important role in the trial of war criminals leading to the execution of a number of top Jamaat leaders and some other party leaders.

He also showed efficiency in the appeal hearing on the Bangabandhu murder and Jail Killing cases.

His magnificence in the hearing on petitions challenging the 5th, 7th and 13th amendments to the constitution was the product of a landmark judgment by the supreme court.

And in the lower court, he used to switch sensational proceedings. He was one of the few Supreme Court lawyers to have moved the historic Purnima rape case to the Sirajganj court.
