All Parks to Be Squatter-Free: DNCC Mayor

From October 3, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will launch drives to remove squatters from parks across the city. This was announced by Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday.

''The eviction drives in the illegally occupied parks will start from the 3rd of next month... This is our promise on the 74th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,'' he said.

The Mayor was addressing a gathering at the inaugural function of a two-day programme organised by DNCC on the occasion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 74th birthday at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan.

Urging illegal occupiers of footpaths to shun their habits, he said, ''You (occupiers) are leaving rod cement on the footpaths but did you not notice once that people are having difficulty because of construction materials clogging streets and sidewalks."

On the occasion, Atiqul Islam unveiled two mobile libraries, named 'Parampara' (tradition).

''Books published on freedom struggle, liberation war, Bangabandhu and his family and Sheikh Hasina will be delivered door-to-door through the two mobile libraries,'' the Mayor said.
