On Monday, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order granting early bail to former Awami League MP AKM Awal and his wife Lyla Parveen in two corruption cases.

The apex court rejected a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking a stay of the couple's HC bail order.

The bench of Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order this morning.

Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Advocate Awshafur Rahman represented the couple.

Earlier on October 5, the High Court (HC) granted a four-week bail to them.

Ali Akbar, Deputy Director of ACC, filed a case on 30 September stating that the couple had illegal assets worth more than Tk 44.5 crore.

Akbar filed three cases against Awal on 31 December last year. His wife, Lyla, was convicted in one of them.

The couple has been on bail in those three cases

According to case records, the former Pirojpur-1 MP took the government lease plot by presenting false information and constructed a three-storey building in his wife's name.

Later, the building was rented out to Pirojpur Palli Bidyut Samity.

In another case, the ACC also reported that the couple had grabbed another piece of government land in Swarupkati Upazila and built a mansion there.

They were also accused of grabbing a half-acre plot of government land and building an illegal wall around it in Pirojpur.
