Local Warning Signal 4 for Maritime Ports

On Friday, the Met Office advised maritime ports to hoist the local cautionary signal number 4 and warned that tidal surges could flood low-lying coastal areas.

In the morning, the Met Office said in a special bulletin that a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. It was located and moved northeastwards over the same area in the northwest bay and adjacent area, reports UNB.

It was 445 km west-southwest of Chittagong Port, 445 km west-southwest of Cox's Bazar Port, 240 km southwest of Mongla Port and 280 km southwest of Payra Port at 6:00 a.m.

The weather office said it is likely to be heading in a northeasterly direction.

Within 48 km of the deep depression center, the overall sustained wind speed is around 50kph, increasing to 60kph in gusts. The sea will stay rough near the middle of the deep depression, the bulletin said.

Parts of Bangladesh, including capital Dhaka, have been experiencing rain since yesterday.

Tidal surge forecast

In the meantime, the Met Office warned that low-lying coastal areas might be inundated by tidal waves three to five feet above the normal astronomical tide under the influence of the deep depression.

Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and their offshore islands and chars are regions that may see tidal surges.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice, the Met Office said.
