Antique Vishnu Idol Recovered in Joypurhat

A black stone idol of the Hindu god Vishnu, worth Tk 75 crore, was recovered by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday evening from Dewra village in Akkelpur Upazila of Jopurhat.

The task force, acting on a tip-off, raided the area and found the idols weighing 380 kilograms, said Commander MM Mohaimenur Rashidm, Joypurhat's additional police superintendent at RAB-5.

The RAB commander said, the seized antique belong to the period of first Mahipala, a notable king of the Pala dynasty. A local dweller named Rajendranath kept the antique idol in his possession making a temple in his house.

Later, the idol was sent to Paharpur Buddhist Monastery in Badalgachhi of Naogaon.
