Dhaka for Greater Partnership for Accelerating Climate Adaptation in S Asia

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen highlighted the importance of cooperation between the countries of South Asia for the successful implementation of adaptation activities in the region.

He hoped that by working together the countries of South Asia could learn and work together, survive and prosper even in difficult circumstances, reports media.

Dr. Momen was addressing a virtual consultation meeting of the Global Adaptation Center (GCA) held on Thursday.

The meeting was organised to set out the strategic policies and finalise the work program of the GCA Regional Office for South Asia based in Dhaka.

Dr. Momen appreciated the support of the countries of South Asia for the establishment of the GCA Regional Office in Dhaka.

He underscored GCA's contribution to the push for international ambition to adapt and reinforce partnerships that are critical to the commitments made in the Paris Agreement.

The Foreign Minister expressed Bangladesh's strong commitment to help both the GCA and the CVF through his hard-earned experience in adaptation.

He also said that South Asia is one of the most adversely affected regions in the world as a result of climate change, and without large-scale and systematic adaptation initiatives, all countries in the South Asian region will experience significant per capita GDP losses. 

Dr Momen urged to keep up the momentum of the creation of the ‘Global Hub on Locally Led Action’.

Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin also joined the event and highlighted GCA's priorities for the South Asia region.

Focal points from South Asian countries and various development partners such as the World Bank, UNDP, UKFCDO and JICA participated in the discussion and made recommendations for a structured work program for GCA Dhaka.
