Hefazat Leaders on 5-Day Remand in 2013 Anarchy Case

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed five leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam, including its central assistant secretary-general Khurshid Alam Kashemi, on five-day remand each in a case lodged over the group’s anarchy in capital’s Paltan and adjacent areas in 2013.

The other remanded accused are Hefajat-e-Islam central joint general secretary Sharafat Hossain, assistant secretary general Ataullah Amin, its Dhaka city unit vice-presidents Jubayer Ahmed and Sanaul Haque.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to place them on 10-day remand each for the sake of proper investigation of the case.

Hefajat-e-Islam laid seize on capital’s Shapla Chattar area on May 5, 2013, unleashing inexpressible atrocities in and around the capital.

They vandalized hundreds of vehicles, shops and offices, setting many of those on fire. They even cut down hundreds of trees grown on the road dividers and used those as barricades to obstruct the law enforcing agencies.
