Court to Order on Reporter Rozina's Bail Today

A Dhaka court is expected to deliver its order on the bail petition of Prothom Alo's Senior Reporter Rozina Islam today in the case filed by a health ministry official under the Official Secrets Act.

The hearing on journalist Rozina Islam's bail appeal came to a close last Thursday. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah heard the bail plea. 

Lawyers from both sides virtually attended in the nearly hour-long hearing.

However, the court did not give any immediate decision on that day. 

Rozina Islam was held by Health Services Division officials inside the Secretariat on 17 May afternoon for allegedly filming confidential government documents. She was harassed and kept there for more than six hours.

Later, she was charged in a case under the Official Secrets Act as charged in a case under the Official Secrets Act at the immediate night. Later, a Dhaka court sent her to jail.

A magistrate court denied the police department's plea for a 5-day remand and instead send her to jail on May 18.

On Rozina's behalf, a bail petition was submitted. The court heard the petition on Thursday and will issue its decision on Sunday.
