The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to purchase the anti-plagiarism software Turnitin to prevent theft and plagiarism in research.

The decision was made Sunday at a virtual meeting of the committee on purchasing plagiarism-checking web services.

Plagiarism in researchers' and teachers' theses can be determined with the help of the Turnitin Software Authenticator part while students' plagiarism can be detected in its feedback studio.

UGC member Prof Dr Abu Taher said the software would initially be provided to 30 public universities.

"Its use will be ensured in all the universities of the country in phases. Using this software will make it easier to protect the rights and originality of research," he added.

It was also decided at the meeting that a policy on using Turnitin would be formulated soon. A roadmap of this software for long-term use would be prepared as well.

Currently, 17 universities are using this software on their own initiatives. Letters will be sent to the universities to know the latest status of the software.
