The High Court has dismissed a
writ petition seeking to postpone by-elections in the Lakshmipur-2
constituency, which became vacant when Shahid Islam, alias Kazi Papul, was
found guilty in a criminal case in Kuwait.
By-elections in the constituency
on June 21 are not legally barred as a result of this.
On June 8, BNP leader Abul Khair
Bhuiyan filed a writ petition in the High Court, asking for the by-elections in
the Lakshmipur-2 constituency to be postponed.
The Kuwaiti Criminal
Investigation Department (CID) detained Shahid Islam, alias Kazi Papul, on
allegations of human trafficking and money laundering on June 6, last year. A
Kuwaiti court sentenced him to four years in prison on January 28 of this year.
The Parliament Secretariat issued
a gazette notification canceling Papul's membership in parliament and vacating
the seat after receiving a copy of the judgment.
