The High Court has dismissed a writ petition seeking to postpone by-elections in the Lakshmipur-2 constituency, which became vacant when Shahid Islam, alias Kazi Papul, was found guilty in a criminal case in Kuwait.

By-elections in the constituency on June 21 are not legally barred as a result of this.

On June 8, BNP leader Abul Khair Bhuiyan filed a writ petition in the High Court, asking for the by-elections in the Lakshmipur-2 constituency to be postponed.

The Kuwaiti Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detained Shahid Islam, alias Kazi Papul, on allegations of human trafficking and money laundering on June 6, last year. A Kuwaiti court sentenced him to four years in prison on January 28 of this year.

The Parliament Secretariat issued a gazette notification canceling Papul's membership in parliament and vacating the seat after receiving a copy of the judgment.
