Bangladesh has suspended on-arrival visa facilities for foreign citizens for an indefinite period, following a spike in coronavirus cases of the Indian variant in the country.

The Security Services Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the directive on Thursday, reports media.

However, foreign investors and businesspersons from countries eligible for on-arrival visa facilities have been kept out of the purview of the government direction.

The directive has already been sent to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and respective airline companies.

CAAB sources say they have already suspended on-arrival visas after receiving the government directive, and the Department of Immigration will verify the Covid-19 certificate from eligible foreign investors and businessmen following their arrival.

The decision was taken after several foreign citizens were refused on-arrival visa at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by the Department of Immigration and then sent back to their origin airports.
